We’ve had several people reach out asking what is a landrace strain, so here you go.

The History of Landrace Strains

Landrace strains have a rich history that span thousands of years. The earliest written mention of cannabis dates back to 2,900 B.C., found in a plant medicine encyclopedia. The genetic lineage of cannabis can be traced to a single plant species originating in the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. This indigenous cannabis variety was utilized for making ropes, clothing, and for medicinal purposes, eventually spreading from its native area to Ancient Greece and Rome. The Ottomans introduced it to Africa, while Europeans transported it to the Caribbean and Central America in the 16th century.

The Origins of Landrace Strains

Landrace strains represent the original, unhybridized sativa and indica cannabis plants, often named after their geographical origins. These strains evolved in isolation in various regions, adapting to the local environments. Each strain’s natural development has endowed it with unique characteristics that suit specific climates and growing conditions. Today, most cannabis strains are hybrids, contributing to the vast selection available at local dispensaries.

A key characteristic of Landrace strains is their robust and extremely stable genetics, because of their long history of naturally acquired immunities, they have developed a resistance to mold, mildew, and pests.

Here are some notable regions recognized for their unique landrace strains:

  • Middle East & Central Asia: This region is home to well-known landrace strains such as Hindu Kush and Afghan Kush, which have thrived in its rugged mountains and harsh climates, resulting in pure indica strains.
  • Thailand: Thai landrace strains originate from Thailand and Southeast Asia. Due to the area’s tropical climate, these plants are purely sativa, characterized by their tall and slender growth.
  • Latin America: In regions like Mexico and Colombia, landrace cannabis plants are distinguished by their 100% sativa chemical phenotype and vibrant green leaves with gold streaks.
  • Africa: The continent’s diverse climates have produced various landrace marijuana strains, with Durban Poison being one of the most renowned. Typically sativa dominant, these African strains often feature neon green leaves adorned with bright orange trichomes.
